God - seeking - the philosophical and religious movement among the Russian intelligentsia of the late nineteenth - early twentieth century. Representatives of this movement — N. Berdyaev , S. Bulgakov , D. Merezhkovsky , Z. Gippius , N. Minsky , V. Rozanov , D. Philosophers, and others — were grouped mainly around the “ Religious Philosophical Society ”; they published the journals Novy Put , Issues of Life , and Libra . The main task of this movement was not the search for a “new God”, but a search for “new ways to God”. God seekers criticized materialism and Marxism for diminishing the personal principle.
Berdyaev in his work “The New Religious Consciousness” (1907) expressed some ideas of God-seeking. The new religious consciousness (“neo-Christianity”) overcomes nihilism, “plebeian offense against the world” and “self-righteous rebellion against God.” Berdyaev recognizes the horrors of the real world, but sincerely believes in a "transcendental outcome." At the same time, “beast-like Christians” - participants of the burning of heretics and pogroms - are being criticized. The renewed religion of God-manhood should not "belittle life", but "spiritualize the flesh" and "sexual love."
