Asturian culture arose in Spain after 5000 BC. e. According to its characteristics, it was epipaleolithic , that is, it preserved the remains of the Paleolithic surrounded by Mesolithic cultures. The dating is based on stratification (the Asturian layers follow the Azilian ) and the findings of mollusks, characteristic of the climate around 4500 BC. e.
Finds found in Asturias, Cantabria, Basque Country and Aquitaine.
The culture was created by the population of the eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula. People of this culture ate shellfish and snails, processed stone. Ornaments (necklaces and pendants), as well as cutting tools, were also made from mollusk shells.
Culture disappeared shortly before the spread of megaliths in Europe, after 3000 BC. e.
