Luis Ernesto Miramontes Cardenas ( Spanish: Luis Ernesto Miramontes Cárdenas ; March 16, 1925 - September 13, 2004 ) - Mexican chemist and engineer.
Luis Miramontes graduated from National Independent University in Mexico City . He was a professor of chemistry at this university, deputy director of the Mexican Petroleum Institute. He worked in the field of organic chemistry, pharmaceuticals, petrochemistry, etc. However, his most famous scientific achievement is the one he produced on October 15, 1951 , a student named Norethindrone , a synthetic analogue of progesterone (the patent for norethindrone was received by Miramontes in collaboration with his supervisors George Rosencrantz and Karl Gerassy , who developed the research program). This substance was later used as the active substance in the world's first oral contraceptive , which is believed to have been used by about 300 million women worldwide. In 2005 , the Mexican Academy of Sciences recognized this invention of Miramontes as Mexico's most significant contribution to world science.
