Background

For the first time, the idea of creating a school was voiced by Rev. Christopher on November 7, 1862 :

... with this I still do not leave myself to be flattered with the hope that the good, prudent, and good-for-good church of Abbess Smaragdѣ the Merciful Lord God will help me, little by little, to carry out my sincere thought about opening and opening a church in her inaugurated monastery initially, although a small school for the orphans bѣdnyh dѣvits spiritual call.

But an orphanage appeared only in 1869 , when Abbess Sevastian, on the advice and with the blessing of His Grace Palladius, accepted 10 girls, mostly orphans of the clergy, into full care of [1] .

Initially, the shelter was located in the Igumen house, but it was soon decided to build a two-story house for it, which was laid on September 25, 1870 on the day of St. Sergius of Radonezh , a temple festival of a warm monastery church. Construction began in 1871 and was completed in 1873 [1] [2] [3] .

By the beginning of the 1880s, the number of pupils had increased to forty-five a year, so it was decided to combine the Abbot's house and the shelter building, building a new three-story building. The construction was carried out at the expense of His Grace Theodosius (up to 10 thousand rubles), and he spent another 9.5 thousand rubles later on its arrangement [1] .

The full course of study at the shelter was six years old: three classes, two years each. They taught reading, writing, “The Law of God”, an explanation of worship, sacred and domestic history, Russian, geography, arithmetic, singing and needlework. In total, from 1873 to 1888 there were 7 issues in the amount of 106 pupils [1] .

In 1888, Bishop Theodosius converted the orphanage into a diocesan school for women. Theodosius donated about 20 thousand rubles to his device and allocated a capital of 10 thousand rubles, from which interest went for the maintenance of the shelter [4] . In 1902 - 1903, the school moved to a new building on Zlatoustinskaya embankment (now the embankment of the VI Army , 113 / Chernyshevsky St. , 1), and in its place a children's shelter was built [5] [6] [7] .
