Biological Description
Representatives of the genus are annual herbaceous plants reaching a height of 30-60 cm.
The stems are straight, branched.
Leaves - double or triple pinnately dissected into thinly linear segments.
Flowers are solitary, bluish; calyx, five sepals ; petals 5-8 in the form of two-lipped formations; There are many stamens, pistils 2-10, more or less fused together.

Economic Significance and Application
All types of nigella are decorative ; good melliferous plants [5] .
Seeds of black sowing, field and damask contain up to 30-40% fatty oil [5] .
Damask chernushka contains essential oil , which can be used in perfumery [5] .
Up to 430 mg% of vitamin C is found in the leaves of sowing, field and damask seeds [5] .
Field chernushka seeds are eaten [5] .
