Biography

Sokolov's mother worked as a surgeon at the Sklifosovsky Institute , her father was the head of the department of the Moscow Institute of Physical Culture . Stanislav himself was involved in sports since his youth - swimming, athletics. He also became interested in painting early, studied at school with an artistic bias No. 236 [1] [2] .

In 1966, having failed to pass a competition at the Moscow Art Institute named after V.I. Surikov , he decided to gain experience and, on the advice of Pavel Tager, entered the evening courses of animated artists at Soyuzmultfilm . A year later, he decided to continue training in animation at VGIK e (1967-1972). He studied graphic animation with Ivan Ivanov-Vano , and voluminous with Vadim Kurchevsky . He started as an artist in a hand-drawn movie. The first work as a multiplier was the picture " Once Upon a Time Kozyavin " [1] [2] [3] .

Sokolov already worked on the film “ Ave Maria ” as a production designer, but at the height of his work he was drafted into the army. He served in the sports battalion. After being demobilized, he returned to the studio and in 1977 made his debut as a director with the film “ Guess ” - an experimental popular comedy about the self-righteous fool-groom Doron [2] .

Subsequent works, including the painting " Black and White Cinema ", which won a number of prestigious awards at international festivals, became more restrained in form. Critics describe Sokolov’s style as “puppet naturalism” or “puppet realism”: his dolls depict actors playing roles assigned to them, which at the same time reproduce not only articulation, but also involuntary human movements - facial expressions, blinking [3] [4] .

Sokolov was among the Soviet animators who worked on the joint Russian-British series Shakespeare: Great Comedies and Tragedies by William Shakespeare as part of the Christmas Films studio. Subsequently, he continued cooperation with the BBC , taking part in the production of the biblical project “The Miracle Worker ” about the life of Jesus Christ [3] . He got the main and most laborious seventy-minute doll part. Fifty sophisticated scenery and more than two hundred dolls made of fast-flex, allowing to give facial expressions and articulations the utmost realism, were created in the Moscow pavilion.

From 2001 to 2018, Sokolov was busy working on the full-length animated film Hoffmanniad (produced by Soyuzmultfilm) based on the life and tales of the writer Ernst Theodor Hoffmann . Despite the difficult production history, the picture was completed, and on March 16, 2018, a special cartoon screening took place at the XXIII Open Russian Festival of Animated Films in Suzdal [5] . The Russian premiere is scheduled for autumn 2018 [6] .

Member of the Union of Russian Filmmakers and the Union of Russian Artists , academician of the Nika Film Academy. Professor VGIK a, head of the department of computer graphics and animation, head of the workshop "Animated film artist" [7] .

Wife - Tatyana Anatolyevna Sokolova, artist and ceramist . Studied at art school together, married more than 40 years. There is a daughter and two grandchildren [2] .
