Memorial stone against war and fascism

Suggestions in a special way to designate Hitler’s home in memory of the victims of Nazism appeared in the first post-war years. In the municipality, they discussed for a long time the possibility of placing a memorial plaque on the wall of the house. The corresponding decision was made in 1983 by the burgomaster Hermann Fuchs, under the influence of Wolfgang Simböck, cultural adviser . However, the board was not installed, as the owner (of the house), who had no relation to Hitler, regarded this as a violation of property rights. The hostess did not allow to establish a memorial plaque, fearing unwanted attention from anti-fascists and neo-Nazis .

A few years later, in 1989 , the initiative took over the new Braunau burgomaster - Gerhard Skiba . The memorial was erected on public land, directly in front of Hitler’s house in early April 1989 , 2 weeks before Hitler’s 100th birthday, thus marking the opening of the monument to this event. The stone was delivered from the quarry of the Mauthausen concentration camp. The inscription on the stone reads: “ Für Frieden, Freiheit und Demokratie. Nie wieder Faschismus. Millionen Tote mahnen "(" For peace, freedom and democracy. We will not allow fascism again, millions of victims ask us about it ").
