Etymology

Apium graveolens . Botanical illustration from the book Atlas des plantes de France 1891

The Russian name celery originated by borrowing from the Dutch name selderij , either from the German sellerie or French céleri , which in turn are borrowed from the Latin selīnum (from the Greek σέλινον - "celery") [3] [4] .

Botanical Description

Biennial or perennial plants of medium and large sizes with a thickened root, preferring to grow on wet soils of swamps and salt marshes . They grow up to 1 m in height and have twice cirrus-dissected leaves on a furrow-branched stalk and small greenish-white flowers collected in complex umbrella inflorescences . The roots of the plant contain sugar, and the leaves are vitamin C.

Historical background

In ancient Egypt, celery was grown as a medicinal plant.

In ancient Greece and Rome, celery leaves crowned the victorious warriors.

Since the 16th century, it began to be grown in Italy, in France and England, as a food aromatic plant.

Other information

The plant was considered to bring happiness, and it was often hung in rooms with onions and garlic .
