Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor

The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR, ErbB-1) is a transmembrane receptor that binds extracellular ligands from the epidermal growth factor group. It belongs to the ErbB receptor family, in particular to the tyrosine kinase receptor subfamily (possessing internal tyrosine kinase activity): EGFR (ErbB-1), HER2 / c-neu ( ErbB-2 ), Her 3 ( ErbB-3 ) and Her 4 ( ErbB- 4 ). Mutations of the receptor, leading to overexpression or increased activity, can cause cancer.
