Story

A young man named William Creamsworth is forced to look for work, as his financial situation leaves much to be desired. He goes to work as a clerk to his brother Edward, who coldly accepts him and keeps himself aloof, tyranny and humiliating William in every possible way. After some time, William finds a friend named York Hansden, who advises him to go to the continent to work as a teacher. Following a friend’s advice, William goes to Brussels , where he arranges to work as a teacher of Latin and English at a school for boys with Mr. Pele. William also combines his new work with teaching in a women's boarding house, the director of which Zoraida Rute gives attention to the young teacher. William falls in love with his boss, but soon finds out that she should marry Mr. Pele. William is disappointed and keeps with Mrs. Rute coldly and restrained, while continuing to work in her institution.

Once he meets a capable and modest student named Francis Henry, who also teaches needlework at the guesthouse. William learns that Francis is very poor and earns a living by teaching at school. He also learns that the girl was born in Switzerland in the family of a Swiss pastor and an Englishwoman, so she herself knows English well and dreams of leaving for England in the future. Contributing to the development of his student’s talents, William eventually realizes that he loves her, but his boss tries to prevent the teacher from communicating with the student and dismisses Francis when she goes on vacation to look after her sick aunt, who is soon dying. In retaliation, William also quits the boarding house and searches for Francis. She lives in dire need after the death of her aunt, and the teacher, who had previously dreamed of making her an offer of a hand and heart, now abandons his plans, since he himself has no means of subsistence, and he will only worsen the position of his student if she becomes his wife. However, William soon finds work in a college for boys and makes Francis an offer. They get married and soon their son Victor is born. A few years later, William fulfills his wife's dream, and they move with their whole family to England, where they live next door to Mr. Crimson's friend York Hansden.
