Group History

Youthmovies' vocalist, Andrew Mirs, originally assembled the Foals and was the lead vocalist and guitarist in the group. In Foals, he managed to release the single "Try This on Your Piano / Look at My Furrows of Worry" on seven-inch vinyl, but quickly left the band to pursue the debut album Youthmovies - Good Nature.

Jack Beavan, Lina Simon and Yannis Filippakis originally played in the mat-rock band The Edmund Fitzgerald , which was of no interest to the music press. The group broke up as it became increasingly serious. After all, The Edmund Fitzgerald was originally created exclusively for fun.

Walter Gervers and Jimmy Smith were part of Face Meets Grill, a small Oxford group. They met and assembled a team of members of Abingdon Boys School, the same school where all the members of Radiohead had come from. The band gave concerts in Oxford and beyond, and even recorded EP in the small town of Hull. After performing at the Truck Festival in 2004, they decided to disperse and go about their own business. Jimmy Smith is the only one from the group who graduated. The rest of the band dropped out after Ben Mackeret signed to Transgressive Records

The group prefers to be self-sufficient, so that all the clips were created by their friend Dave Ma, as well as the covers (excluding the cover for Total Life Forever) were created by their friend Tinhead. The Foals were influenced by many and genreally diverse groups: The Redneck Manifesto , Harmonia , Talking Heads , Arthur Russel . The musical style varies between mat rock , indie rock and new rave .

In early 2007, Foals released singles Hummer and Mathletics, produced by Gareth Parton. Both singles were released on vinyl in a small edition. Hummer later sounded the soundtrack for the Skins series.

Antidotes (2007-2009)

In the summer of 2007, the band began working on their debut album in New York . It was produced by Dave Cytek from TV on the Radio . However, the group decided to mix the recordings themselves, as the first mix that made Cytek "sounded like it was recorded in the Grand Canyon ." In many interviews, Filippakis said that the group and Cytec are on good terms, despite the fact that they rejected his work. The band's debut album, Antidotes, was released March 24, 2008 in Britain and April 8 in the United States . The disc became commercially successful, reaching third place in the British chart. The group in other countries expected more modest success: Antidotes hit the charts only in France , Japan and the Netherlands . Other Antidotes editions included the early singles Hummer and Mathletics, produced by Parton.

Total Life Forever (2009—2011)

In August 2009, the band began recording their second album at Svenska Grammofon Studion , in Gothenburg , Sweden . The band described Total Life Forever as follows: in terms of sound it resembles a “tropical prog. They also claim that the album turned out to be less drivable than originally planned. The album was produced by Luke Smith of Clor . The disc was named after an element of Ray Kurzweil 's theory of technological singularity . For some time, Yannis was fond of futurology , which can be seen from the lyrics of songs from Total Life Forever.

On March 1, 2010, the Spanish single Sahara first aired on Zane Lowe's show on BBC Radio 1 . On the Foals website, on the same night the track was released, you could watch a clip for this song, shot by their longtime friend Dave Ma. On March 6, the site dedicated to Total Life Forever officially started working. Puzzles appeared on the site, which were pictures, text and small pieces of songs from the new album. The last such puzzle appeared on March 12 with a password from the updated site of the group. On March 13, the site was opened. There you could find a lot of materials related to Total Life Forever: a new art concept, samples, photos and videos of the workflow. The lead single This Orient was released on May 3, 2010, the album itself went on sale a week later.

Spanish Sahara was the soundtrack to many TV shows: Entourage on HBO , Skins and Misfits on E4, and Outcasts on BBC One . The single on physical media, Spanish Sahara, was released in September 2010. A remix with strings from London Contemporary Orchestra also entered.

The album was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize . In an interview with Coup De Main online magazine, Jimmy Smith said the band members live together both on tour and off-road. In particular, he said that they were going to compose demos for a new album in Australia together. “It's like going on a concert tour with your family, it's really great,” Smith said.

Holy Fire (2012—2015)

On October 19, 2012, the group announced on its Facebook page that their new album would be called Holy Fire. A week later, information appeared that the album would go on sale in Britain on February 11, 2013. The lead single, Inhaler, first hit the radio on November 5, 2012. The new song My Number could be heard during the Foals performance at the Jules Holland show. The album was released on February 11, 2013, both in Britain and in the United States .

What Went Down (2015 - 2019)

The fourth album of the group was released on August 28, 2015. On September 5, a video for the song “Birch tree” appeared on the net. With the new album, the group climbed to 3rd place on the British chart.

At the end of 2017, "Foals" said they were writing a new album.

In 2018, the band's bass player leaves the band. So far, there is no new bass player.

Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost Part 1 & 2 (2019 - Present)

Information on the official website states that the first part of the album will be released on March 8, 2019, and the release of the second part will be held on October 18, 2019.
