International reserves are assets that are freely available to the monetary authorities and controlled by them in order to meet the needs for financing the balance of payments, to intervene in the foreign exchange markets to influence the exchange rate and for other related purposes (such as maintaining confidence in the currency and economy, and also as a basis for external borrowing) ^[1] .

International reserves include monetary gold , special drawing rights (SDR) , a reserve position in the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and other reserve assets ^[1] .
