Biography

Education

Sergei Yakovlevich Elpatievsky was born on November 3 or 4, 1854 in the village of Novoselki-Kudrino, Vladimir province, in the family of a rural priest. He studied at a religious school, after which in 1868 he studied at the seminary . In 1872 he entered Moscow University [4] at the Faculty of Law, and later transferred to medical.

Participation in the populist movement

In the 1870s he participated in the populist movement. In 1875 he took part in the organization of populist settlements near Anapa . In Moscow, he provided his apartment for the assembly of the populists. In 1876 - 1877, Elpatievsky, together with the landlords S.V. Martynov and V.S. Lebedev, organized a student group. The circle coordinated student activities, organized assistance to political exiles in Siberia.

In 1877, Elpatievsky was first brought to the investigation in the case of relations with revolutionary circles, but was released due to lack of evidence.

In 1878 he graduated from university. He began working as a doctor in the Skopinsky district of the Ryazan province . He continued to engage in revolutionary activities. In 1880, Elpatievsky was arrested on charges of promoting the " People’s Will ", and was sent to the Ufa province under supervision.

Sergei Yakovlevich repeatedly appealed to the governor of the Yenisei province with a request to allow him medical practice, but was refused. He began to practice medicine for free. Elpatievsky was granted the right of free movement around the district to combat epidemics of diphtheria and scarlet fever in the Angara region and measles in Turukhansk . Sergey Yakovlevich received thanks from the Governor I.K. Pedashenko for the fight against epidemics.

On April 21, 1886, the Chelyabinsk merchant Balakshin asked the governor I.K. Pedashenko to allow the exiled doctor to accompany him to Lake Shira . The governor allowed Yelpatievsky β€œfor scientific purposes” to visit other lakes of the Minusinsk district. Elpatievsky set forth his scientific observations on the healing properties of the water of Lake Shira at a meeting of the Yenisei Provincial Society of Doctors.

After the October Revolution he lived in Moscow. From 1922 to 1928 he worked as a doctor in the Kremlin hospital.

Sergei Yakovlevich Elpatievsky died on January 9, 1933 in Moscow. He was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery .
