Biography

Aghvan Babayan was born on November 5, 1919 in the village of Taratumb of the Armenian Democratic Republic into a peasant family. Armenian by nationality. He received secondary education, in 1939 he graduated from the Yerevan Pedagogical College , after which he worked as a teacher in his native district in the village of Khachik .

In 1940 he was called up for military service in the ranks of the Red Army , which included in the battlefields of the Great Patriotic War from the beginning of 1943. He began to fight in the rank of senior sergeant as commander of the infantry platoon of the 647th infantry regiment of the 216th infantry Red Banner Division 51st Army of the 4th Ukrainian Front . He participated in the battles for the liberation of the Kuban , Donbass , the city of Melitopol , the breakthrough of the German defense in Sivash and the assault on the city of Sevastopol .

He was especially distinguished on May 8, 1944 , when in the battles for the city of Sevastopol the assault group of the Babayan platoon first broke into the city in the cemetery area and destroyed the enemy pillbox . Then, after the command of the battalion failed, the younger lieutenant Babayan, on a personal initiative, took command of the battalion. Despite the stubborn resistance offered by the enemy in the city, the battalion of Babayan, conducting an assault battle, completed the task of capturing the quarters of the city of Sevastopol , while destroying more than 1,000 enemy soldiers and officers. During the participation of Aghvan Babayan in the battles of World War II, he was wounded four times and every time after that he returned to the front line.

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945 for exemplary performance of command missions on the front of the struggle against Nazi invaders and the courage and heroism of the guard shown to this, Lieutenant Babayan Aghvan Nagapetovich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Medal The Star ”(No. 6179) [1]

In 1955, he graduated from the Yerevan Pedagogical Institute , and in 1959, a party school under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia. He lived and worked in Yerevan .
