About twenty German companies, who created in 2009 a consortium that will engage in attracting investment in the Desertec project, were going to realize this idea. The project planned to locate solar power plants in several countries of the region where political stability is observed. Desertec will be joined by Italy and Spain; interest in the project was also shown in North America.
Representatives of German companies promised to prepare a detailed action plan in a couple of years. According to them, from a technological point of view, the project is quite real. Desertec was expected to provide at least 15% of Europe's electricity needs. After starting power plants at full capacity, Desertec could produce up to 100 gigawatts of clean energy. For comparison, 100 conventional power plants produce the same amount. The first "African" electricity was supposed to begin to flow into the homes of Europeans within ten years after the start of the project.
At the end of 2012, large companies Siemens and Bosch left the consortium; by May 2013, the project was considered close to failure [2] [3] [4] . One of the main reasons that the project organizers did not initially foresee is the political and social instability in Tunisia , Libya, and Egypt caused by the Arab spring [5] .
