Builds
Pre-Milestone / Vista Post RTM
This assembly is considered as updated Windows Vista (Post RTM), it has changed the sound settings menu. It was released on May 15, 2007. Its build number is 6429. [1]
Milestone
Milestone 1
The first known build of Windows 7 became known as the "Milestone 1 (M1) code drop" with the number 6.1.6519.1, according to TG Daily. It was sent to a number of key Microsoft partners in January 2008 in 32- and 64-bit versions. [2] [3] This assembly had a different taskbar from Windows Vista, although this feature was disabled. [four]
On April 20, 2008, a video of assembly 6.1.6574.1, the second assembly of M1, appeared on the network. It included a modified Windows Explorer and a new Support Center. [5]
Milestone 2
According to a TG Daily article dated January 16, 2008, the release of Milestone 2 code corp was scheduled for April or May 2008. [6] Milestone 2 was demonstrated at D6 conference [7] with the number 6.1.6589.1. The build had a different taskbar from Windows Vista .
Milestone 3
According to Paul Thurrott , Milestone 3 (build 6780) was sent out to Microsoft employees and close partners in the first week of September 2008. Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet [8] and Stephen Chapman of UX Evangelist [9] described the assembly visually and functionally similar to Windows Vista however, some embedded applications now had a Ribbon interface, as in Office 2007 . Many applications built into previous versions of Windows (such as: Calendar, Photo Album, Mail, Meeting Space and Movie Maker) were removed. These applications are available for download on Windows Live .
Pre-beta
At the PDC conference, Microsoft unveiled a pre-beta of the new operating system. [10] The demonstration was carried out at assembly 6933, the same assembly was installed on all PCs in the conference room for viewing and interaction. However, the assembly, which Microsoft sent as a pre-beta, had the number 6801, and differed from 6933 in changes in the interface, in particular, in 6801 the new taskbar (or SuperBar), similar to the SuperBar from assembly 6933, was disabled by default. But the patch was released, which activated SuperBar in 6801. A little later, the new version of the patch also activated the dynamic change of desktop wallpaper, touch control and the new Aero Peek window management function. [11] [12]
Beta
At the end of December 2008 , the next test version, numbered as build 7000, leaked to the Network . [13] This assembly was the first official beta version of the new system, Windows 7 Beta.
The beta release of the new operating system officially took place on January 9, 2009 . It was available for download as an ISO image of a DVD disc in 32- bit and 64- bit architecture. Windows 7 Beta was running until August 1, 2009 . [14] . Starting July 1, 2009, the OS will restart every two hours, recalling the end of the operation period [15] . You could download Windows 7 Beta until February 10 , starting from this day the download became unavailable.
There were problems with the release of Windows 7 Beta, for example, it cut off the first seconds of mp3 files . But the error was rightly fixed by the developers.
Pre-RC
On March 14, Windows 7 build 7057 leaked to the network. On March 25, a limited group of Microsoft TechNet partners received Windows 7 build 7068 (6.1.7068.0.winmain.090321-1322). On March 26, this assembly successfully leaked to the Web.
On April 7, the next build 7077 (6.1.7077.0.winmain_win7rc.090404-1255) leaked to the network, dated April 4 . On April 8, TechNet confirmed that this assembly is RC Escrow. And this meant that the public RC1 did not have to wait long.
Release Candidate 1
Build Release Candidate 1 (RC1) is based on the winmain_win7rc branch, in which it was built. This information was promptly confirmed by WZorNet.
The official candidate version of Windows 7 Release Candidate was build 7100.0.winmain_win7rc.090421-1700, it was signed (engineering sign-off).
This version has English, German, Spanish, French and Japanese localization. What about Russian, only beta testers and localizers received it through the Microsoft Connect service. However, the Russified Windows 7 RC has already leaked to the network. [16]
On April 30, Microsoft distributed Windows 7 RC to MSDN and Technet subscribers.
On May 5, it became publicly available, and will remain in this state at least until August 2009 [15] without limiting the number of downloads and keys. It can be downloaded as an ISO image of a DVD disc in 32- bit and 64- bit architecture.
Since May 27, users of the RC version of Windows 7 Ultimate in the Update Center have become available language packs as an optional update, including Russian. They are installed through Windows Update with the language of any assembly: English, Spanish, Chinese, Ukrainian, etc. Another 30 language packs are also available.
Beginning March 1, 2010, the OS will restart every two hours, reminding you of the end of the work period [15] , and on June 1, 2010, the OS will stop working.
Also on the night of June 3, the IDX assembly of Windows 7 build 7201.0.winmain_win7ids.090601-1516 appeared on the Web. This build is similar to the 2nd release candidate, which will not be publicly available. [17]
Release-to-Manufacturing (RTM)
The official release date is scheduled for October 22, 2009 [18] . According to Acer management, preinstalled Windows 7 will be available on Z5600 personal computers of their assembly from October 23, 2009 [19] [20] .
On May 11, 2009, Microsoft Vice President Bill Wechte at the TechEd conference announced that the corporation is developing a new Windows 7 desktop operating system at an accelerated pace, so the system will be released by the beginning of Christmas sales in the US and Europe ( October 22, 2009 ). “We are getting ready just in time for the sales season,” he said [21] .
On July 21, 2009, the final RTM version of Windows 7 (the so-called Golden Code) leaked, and it was signed on July 18, 2009 .
On July 23, 2009, Microsoft announced on its blog that it had completed the development of the Windows 7 operating system. According to the detailed explanation, the operating system was successfully tested by all development departments, translated into all major languages and will be available for official download via the Internet by August 7.
July 30, 2009, the Windows 7 activation system was hacked due to the applied OEM activation method, similar to the Windows Vista OEM activation system [22] .
October 22, 2009 the operating system went on retail, including in Russia [23] .
