History
In antiquity, the site of Chillicotti was the center of the Hopwell tradition - a wide network of social and cultural contacts of the Indian tribes that existed in the period 200 BC. e. - 500 g. e. The Hopwell Trade Routes reached the Rocky Mountains, and in the valleys of the Sayoto and Ohio Rivers they built many mounds. Later, shortly before the arrival of Europeans in these places, the Shawnee Indians moved here.
Most European settlements appeared here after the American Revolution . Migrants from Virginia and Kentucky moved west along the Ohio River in search of land. The city of Chillicoti became Ohio 's first capital from the inception of the state in 1803 to 1810 , when Zanesville became the capital for two years as a result of a compromise agreement [2] . In 1812, Chillicoti again became the capital, but already in 1816 it was moved to Columbus as a more accessible place for residents of the state [3] .
There were many free African Americans among the migrants in Chillicoti who created an active community here. Chillicoti served as one of the Underground Railway transshipment points - a network of semi-legal and illegal contacts for transporting runaway slaves to the northern states.
Geography

One of the largest employers in the area is the Pixelle Paper Mill (formerly Glatfelter , formerly called Mead Paper), which has been operating for over 100 years. A factory can sometimes create harmful odors, which residents call the “smell of money” [7] [8] .
Despite the small population of the city, it has two correctional facilities at once - this is Chillicoti Prison (1966) and Ross County Prison (1987).
