The river Elviusau is located in the southern part of Iceland. It appeared as a result of the confluence of the Hvitau and Sog rivers in the area of the Ingolfsfjadl mountain, from where Elvysau continues to flow in a wide stream. Near the town of Selfoss, the river narrows and flows through the Torsarhraun’s lava field. Then, Elvüsau becomes wider again, and in the region of the confluence with the Atlantic Ocean, it reaches a width of 5 kilometers, thus creating an estuary - one of the widest in Northern Europe. The distance from Selfoss to the mouth of the river is 25 kilometers.
Elväsau, along with the Töursau river, is the most abundant in Iceland. On average, in summer it carries 330–470 m³ / s, in winter - 300–500 m³ / s, sometimes the channel reaches 2500 m³ / s. During the melting of glaciers on the river creates the threat of flooding.
Rich in fish, especially salmon .
