For the 12th time in the hockey tournament of the Olympic Games, a set of medals was played among men.

6 teams of Division A, 5 strongest teams of Division B were admitted to the tournament, according to the results of the 1971 World Cup, and the hosts of the Games were the Japanese team.

According to the results of the 1971 World Cup , a preliminary tournament was immediately held. The losers held the tournament according to the "each with each" system for 7-11 places, and the winners according to the "each with each" system played 1-6 places. Due to the failure of the GDR team , the USSR team , as the current Olympic champion, immediately fell into the top six.

Canada boycotted the tournament, protesting against unfair international rules that allowed the USSR to recruit professionals, while forbidding Canadians who were forced to use students to do so. [one]
