Story

The pilot episode, titled Rebirth, begins in 2019, 20 years after Batman’s New Adventures, when Bruce Wayne decided to end his career as an injustice fighter. Further, the story continues in 2039, in Gotham, already as in a futuristic metropolis, with stunning views of high-rise buildings and aircraft. High school student Terry McGuinness, accidentally falling into the estate of Bruce, fleeing the local gang of Jokers, reveals the secret of the Bat. That evening, Terry's father is killed by tycoon minions Derek Powers, disguising the crime as an attack by "clowns." Upon learning of the cause of his father’s death, a biological weapons data disc, McGuinness returns to Wayne’s house and picks up the latest modification of Batman’s costume. After a long debate with Bruce, the legend is born again: under the guidance of experienced Wayne, Terry goes to battle with evil in all its manifestations.

At the end of the first season, Powers (Terry's first sworn enemy) was destroyed by his own son Paxton, who seized power over the company. Terry then took up his own personal life and the work of Batman. Also, his girlfriend - the girl Max - finds out his secret and begins to help him.

In one of the episodes of the animated series Justice League: Without Borders (season 4, episode 13), events that take place somewhat later in this storyline are shown. According to them, Terry McGinnis is the son of Bruce Wayne. In fact, Wayne didn’t even know his parents - the intelligence agencies, having received his DNA, picked up a married couple that looked similar to Thomas and Martha Wayne, and changed the genocode of Warren McGinnis, Terry's father. This was the first step in getting a new Batman. It was planned to kill the boy’s parents under the same circumstances as Bruce’s parents, but Andrea Beaumont (Fantasy from the full-length cartoon about Batman), who personally knew Bruce Wayne, turned out to be the hitman. In the end, although Phantasm did not kill Terry's parents, he still became Batman, as planned. After clarifying the circumstances, he himself says to Bruce "I am proud of my old man!"

There were plans to release a second film after The Return of the Joker. The main antagonist was to be Catwoman . It was she who cloned Bruce Wayne to create Terry. This revelation made the story even darker and showed that Selina Kyle may have had noble intentions. However, due to low DVD sales, this idea had to be abandoned [2] .

Video Release

At Comic-Con 2019, it was announced that the animated series was restored and will be released on October 29 along with a feature film and additional materials on 6 Blu-ray . 41 episodes were completely redone, graininess was removed for better color reproduction, dust and dirt were removed from the 35 mm film , and resolution was also increased. Unfortunately, the source code for 11 episodes was damaged, and they were only partially restored. In general, the quality has become higher. Also added are audio comments from producer Bruce Timm [7] . He did not rule out the possibility of a fourth season coming out if the new edition had good sales [8] .

Short film

In 2014, on the occasion of Batman’s 75th birthday, the creator of DC: The New Frontier comics, screenwriter and artist Darwin Cook released his short film Batman Beyond, based on this animated series. Especially for this, Kevin Conroy and Will Friedl returned to their heroes and voiced them. Premiered at WonderCon [9] .
