Grohls Veste replaced the old Dickman Stadium in 1998 . Plans to expand and modernize the old Dickman Stadium were rejected and the stadium was demolished. The cost of building a new stadium in place of the old one was estimated at about 33 million guilders and took fourteen months to build, the first symbolic stone was laid on January 31, 1997 . The first match at the new stadium was held on May 10, 1998 as part of the Dutch championship against PSV, the match ended in a historic victory for Twente 3-0.
The famous song You'll Never Walk Alone in the recordings of Gerry & The Pacemakers musicians is played in the stadium before each match.
In 2006, plans appeared to expand the stadium to a capacity of 24,353 seats. This expansion was completed in September 2008 , and the initial number of 24,353 places was reduced to 24,244 places. Twente also plans to reconstruct Grohls Veste in order to increase the capacity of the stadium to 40 thousand in 2011 . Perhaps due to the ongoing reconstruction, on July 7, 2011, the roof partially collapsed at the stadium. There were five people under the rubble, several wounded were taken to the hospital [1] [2] [3] [4] .
