Botanical Description
Annual plant 5-15 cm tall.
The stalk is cranked, ascending, densely pubescent with small, bent down hairs.
Stem leaves in the amount of 3-4 pairs, short petiole, ovate or oblong-ovate, wedge-shaped at the base, whole-marginal. The bracts are large and very wide, rhombically ovate, widely wedge-shaped or rounded below, sharply narrowed into a short wide petiole .
The inflorescence is flattened-capitate. The flowers are lilac. Calyx is long and narrowly cylindrical, protruding-bristly-hairy, its teeth are short, linear-lanceolate, converging; corolla tube long and thin, protruding from the cup.
Fruits - nuts , oblong-ovate, dark brown, matte.
It blooms in May and August. The fruits ripen in July and August.
Distribution and Ecology
It is found in the European part of Russia , in the Caucasus , in Central Asia .
It grows on steppe and rocky slopes , abandoned fields.
Meaning and Application
The plant contains an essential oil (0.8-1.1%), which is a colorless liquid with a mint smell, but without a cooling taste. The bulk of the oil is pulegon (50–65%), in addition, the presence of α-pinene and menthol has been established . Essential oil is used in the perfume industry for the perfume of soaps , tooth powders and pastes . It is used as a source of bulletproof, which, during restoration, provides menthol for medicine and the perfume industry.
Fruits and essential oil are used in the preparation of sauces for lamb meat , added to various mixtures of spices, in vegetable soups and to cheese dishes.
