Vitaliy Vladimirovich Zhurkin (born January 14, 1928 , Moscow , RSFSR , USSR ) —Soviet and Russian historian, political scientist , Americanist and Europeanist . Biography
After graduating from high school in 1946, he entered the Moscow State Institute of Foreign Affairs of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the Historical and International Faculty, which he graduated with honors in 1951 [1] .
In 1951 - 1965 he worked in the State Committee on Television and Radio Broadcasting of the USSR , was a member of the board of the State Committee, editor-in-chief of the main editorial board of propaganda; in 1965, deputy editor of the Asia and Africa Department of the Pravda newspaper; in 1965–1968 - Counselor of the USSR Embassy in India .
In the Academy of Sciences of the USSR - the Russian Academy of Sciences since 1968. Doctor of Historical Sciences (1976), Professor (1979). Head of Department, Deputy Director of the USA and Canada Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1968–1987), Member of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences , Academician-Secretary of the Department of World Economy and International Relations of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1988–1998), Director of the Institute of Europe of the USSR Academy of Sciences / RAS (1987–1999 ). Member of the Central Committee of the CPSU (1990-1991). Since 1999 - Honorary Director of the Institute of Europe, RAS.
Winner of the USSR State Prize (1980), member of the Scientific Council of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia . Deputy Chairman of the RAS Commission on International Security and Arms Control. Full member of the European Academy of Sciences, Arts and Literature (since 1990 ), the World Academy of Arts and Sciences (since 1994 ). Chairman of the Board of the Association for European Studies.
In the 1990s, V. Zhurkin took an active part in the campaign of Russian scientists against the expansion of NATO . He has performed in various audiences at conferences in Brussels (controversy with NATO Deputy Secretary General G. von Moltke), London (at the conferences of the Royal Institute of International Relations), France (at symposia of the European Union Security Studies Institute in Paris and Cana), Oslo, Stockholm, Prague, Austria (Vienna and Tutzing), Riga and Japan (at the conference of European and Japanese experts at the Center for Slavic Studies at Hokkaido University) [2] .
