Biography

Princess Elizabeth Christina was the first child in the family of Duke Ludwig Rudolf Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttelsky and his wife Christina Louise Ettingen .

Elizabeth Christina's grandfather Anton Ulrich Braunschweig-Wolfenbuttelsky managed to negotiate with Empress Amalia Wilhelmina Braunschweig-Luneburg about the engagement of his 13-year-old granddaughter with Karl. The bride raised in the Protestant religion for some time resisted the wedding, not wanting to accept Catholicism , but then gave up, including thanks to the persuasion of her aunt Henrietta Christina , Abbess of Gundersheim , and converted to Catholicism on May 1, 1707 in Bamberg .

In 1708, the young married in Barcelona . In 1711, Emperor Joseph I died. Karl, who did not see any ability in political affairs at Elizabeth Christina, nevertheless left his wife a viceroy in Spain , and he himself went to Vienna to be crowned emperor. Elizabeth Christina left Spain in 1713 .

The only and long-awaited son of Karl and Elizabeth Christina Leopold Johann died shortly after birth. Of the four children of Elizabeth Christina, only two survived to adulthood. Daughter Maria Anna died during childbirth. Through the surviving daughter of Maria Theresa, Elizabeth Christina is the ancestor of the Habsburg-Lorraine branch. She was buried in the Imperial Tomb in Vienna.

The daughter Maria Theresa also did not allow her mother to participate in the management, although she respected her. However, Elizabeth Christina managed to arrange the marriage of her niece Elizabeth Christina of Braunschweig with King of Prussia Frederick II and her nephew Anton Ulrich of Braunschweig with Anna Leopoldovna .
