Biography
Together with his uncle Stefan Lazarevich , George helped Sultan Bayazid in his struggle with Tamerlan (Timur) and after that decided to concentrate all power over Serbia in his hands - as a result of which, a feud with Stefan began. In the end, Stefan recognized George as his heir and gave him part of Serbia to control.
In 1426, they both fled to Hungary and recognized the supreme power of the emperor Sigismund . After the death of Stefan in the following year, 1427 , George Brankovich became a Serbian despot, but already from 1428 he was forced to pay tribute to the Ottomans .
In 1439, Sultan Murad II attacked Serbia, and George was again to flee to Hungary. He could return to Serbia only with the help of the Polish king Vladislav and the Hungarian commander Janos Hunyadi . When Vladislav, violating the oath, in 1444 resumed the war with the Ottoman Empire , Georgy Brankovich did not help him and thus became the culprit of the disaster near Varna .
In 1453, George sent to help Sultan Mehmed II under the besieged Constantinople troops, which included Konstantin from Ostrovitsa , the future author of “ Notes of the Janissary ”.
George died from a wound that he received in one of the battles with the Hungarians .
