Chapaevka (obsolete. Mocha [2] ) is a river in the Samara and Orenburg regions , the left tributary of the Volga .

Description
The river is 298 km long, the basin area is 4310 km² [3] . The source is located at the junction of Middle Syrt and Sinyi Syrt (spurs of General Syrt ) on the border of the regions, 8 km southeast of the village of Sharipovka (Samara region) and 7 km west of the village of Pokrovka (Orenburg region) [4] . From the source it flows northwest to Chapaevsk [5] , where it turns northeast in the Volga floodplain [6] . Below, near Novokuybyshevsk, it turns west. It flows into the Sukhaya Samarka canal (lower section) on the left bank of the Volga in the southern part of Samara Luka [7] . The mouth is 9 km northwest of the village of Mayak .
Hydrography
The river is predominantly snow fed, shallow. A constant flow is observed only in the lower part. The channel in the middle and upper parts at low water dries up, forming a chain of lakes in the channel [8] .
Water flow rate 2.53 m³ / s. The width in the lower reaches is up to 50 m, the depth is up to 11 m. The banks are mainly covered with salt licks and cultivated fields, meadow vegetation is found near the mouth [8] .
The river experiences a strong anthropogenic and technogenic impact, about half of the runoff below Chapaevsk falls into wastewater [9] .
Economic value
Navigable in the backwater zone of the Saratov reservoir to the northern part of Chapaevsk [10] (further blocked by a dam). Navigable also flows into the lower Krivush (channel from the Volga).
The lower left tributaries are connected in the upper Kuybyshevsky irrigation and irrigation canal [11] with the rivers of the Chagra and Bolshoi Irgiz basins and with Bezenchuk .
Administrative Borders and Settlements
It flows along the border of the Kurmanayevsky district (Orenburg region), along the territory of Alekseevsky , Neftegorsky , Volzhsky , Krasnoarmeysky , Bezenchuksky districts, urban districts Chapaevsk and Novokuybyshevsk (all - Samara region).
The largest settlements on the river are Chapaevsk, Mayak, Podyem-Mikhaylovka , Yablonovy Ravine , Bogdanovka , Dmitriyevka , Sukhaya Vyazovka , the basin also contains (excluding the Volga duct basin): Novokuybyshevsk (partially), Krasnoarmeyskoye , Osinki , etc.
Environmental activities
Protected natural territories (natural monuments) of regional significance “Source of the Chapaevka River” and “Estuary of the Chapaevka River” have been created [12] . It was planned to create a protected territory of federal significance “Chapaevsky Estuaries” in the entire left-bank floodplain of the Volga south of Samarskaya Luka - the territory is included in the list of key ornithological territories of Russia [13] , but does not yet have a federal environmental status.
Etymology
The modern name comes from the name of the city of Chapaevsk. The old name Mocha is a common name for rivers flowing through low-lying, wetlands [2] .

According to the state water register of Russia, it belongs to the Lower Volga Basin District , the water sector of the river - Chapaevka from source to mouth, the river sub-basin - there is no sub-basin. The river basin is the Volga from the upper Kuibyshev reservoir to the confluence with the Caspian [3] .
