Education and degrees
In 1982, he graduated from the History Department of the Pskov State Pedagogical Institute , majoring in History, Social Studies, and English.
In 1990 he graduated from the graduate school of the A. Herzen Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute . Then he defended his thesis on "Anti-war movement in the United States (1981-1988)" with a degree in general history. In 2000, at St. Petersburg State University, he defended his doctoral dissertation "The Reagan Revolution": Theory and Practice of American Conservatism (1981-1988), specializing in General History.
Professional Activities
In 1982 - 1985 He worked as a history teacher at secondary school No. 1 in Pskov (the former Provincial Male Gymnasium). Revived the work of the school museum, received unique materials from its graduates: writers V. A. Kaverin and Yu.N. Tynianov, Academicians A.A. Letaveta , I.K. Kikoin and L.A. Zilber.
In 1985 - 2000 worked at the Pskov State Pedagogical Institute (assistant, senior lecturer, associate professor, senior researcher. From 1993 to 2000 - head of the department of general history). On his initiative and with active participation, the scientific and practical local history journal Pskov began to be published.
In 1997 , the publishing house of the Pskov Center “Renaissance”, thanks to international scientific ties of V. N. Garbuzov and financial support from the Austrian Ministry of Education and Culture, published the first issue of the metamorphosis of history. The editorial board of the first issue of the almanac included scientists from the Netherlands , Austria , a number of universities and pedagogical institutes in Russia. He was the responsible editor of the first two issues of the almanac. He is currently Deputy Chairman of the Editorial Board of the almanac.
In 1997 - 1998 As a Fulbright scholar, he completed an internship in the USA, at the University of Tennessee (Knoxville, Tennessee , USA ), during which he collected material for books about American conservatism, Ronald Reagan and Alexander Haig.
In July 2000 , he joined the Institute of the USA and Canada of the Russian Academy of Sciences, as the head of the department of internal political research.
In 2006 , he was elected Deputy Director of the Institute of the USA and Canada of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ISCRAN). He oversaw research on US political and socio-political issues.
In 2016, he was elected Director of ISCRAN (see below).

Scientific work of V.N. Garbuzov combines with teaching in higher educational institutions. During his work at the Pskov State Pedagogical Institute, he gave lectures and seminars for students of the history faculty in the courses “New and Contemporary History of the Countries of Europe and America”, “Historiography of World History”, “Source Studies of World History”, “Political Process and the Political System of the USA” , as well as a number of special courses and special seminars. Since 2000, he has been working as a professor in the Department of World Politics at the State Academic University of the Humanities (GAUGN) and gives a course of lectures “Recent History of the Countries of Europe”, “History of the USA”. Since January 2003 - First Deputy Dean of this faculty, head of the department of foreign regional studies. In 2004-2006 He worked as a professor in the Department of Regional Studies, Faculty of Regional Studies and Foreign Languages, Moscow State University M.V. Lomonosov. Under his leadership, 4 candidate dissertations were prepared and defended.
V.N. Garbuzov takes an active part in the preparation of information and analytical materials for federal government bodies: the Presidential Administration, the Security Council of the Russian Federation, the State Duma and the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, the Russian Foreign Ministry and other administrative departments.
December 22, 2015 appointed acting Director of ISCRAN. February 24, 2016 V.N. Garbuzov at the general meeting of the Institute was elected Director of ISCRAN. On April 11, 2016, he was approved as the director of ISCRAN.
