Psalm 22

According to the interpretation of Athanasius the Great, the psalm “is sung on behalf of the Gentiles , who are delighted that the Lord feeds them, and also describe the mysterious meal that Himself grazing them offered them ” ^[1] . At the same time, neither the writing (the traditional “Psalm of David ”), nor the content of the psalm give an indication of the time and reason for its writing ^[2] . King David, mentioned in the writing as the author of the psalm, grazed sheep in his youth ( 1 Sam. 16:11 ), which could contribute to the fact that in this psalm God appears in the form of the Shepherd. In Christianity, this psalm has become one of the sources for representing Jesus Christ as a good shepherd .

In Judaism, the psalm is sung during the third Sabbath meal ( Saturday afternoon) and in the memorial prayer (“ Izkor ”), among the Sephardim and Hasidim - also in the evening prayer of the Sabbath.

In the Orthodox Church , because of the meal prepared by God in the psalm described in the psalm, this psalm is read at the beginning of the “Follow to Communion ” ^[3] .

In music

The verses of the psalm were used by F. Schubert , A. Dvořák (vocal cycle “Bible songs”, op. 99 No. 4), L. Bernstein .
