Biography

During the war he was evacuated, in 1945 he returned with his parents to his hometown.

Then he worked for four years as a history teacher, two years as a salesman in the Mir bookstore (Nevsky, 13 — books of socialist countries), and another two years as a translator at the Central Design Bureau of the Navy.

In 1959-1960, a graduate student at the Department of History of Ancient Greece and Rome, Faculty of History, Leningrad State University and in July 1960, presented his Ph.D. thesis on the Phoenician colonization of the Western Mediterranean, which he defended two years later, in 1962, at the Institute of Archeology of the Academy of Sciences. In 1972 he defended his doctoral dissertation at the Institute of History (the opponents were G.L. Kurbatov and I.S. Katsnelson ).

At the request of the corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, N.V. Pigulevskaya was enrolled in the staff of the Leningrad branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences on July 1, 1961. Here, combining work with teaching at the Faculty of History of Leningrad State University, Shifman worked until his death. In 1989-1990 he was the first head of the Jewish cultural society of Leningrad.

A strong blow for him was the death of his wife Galina Semenovna [2] ( GPB employee), who died in the summer of 1989.
