Biography
On the father - the descendant of the Lyon Protestants , the settlers of the XVII century from France to the USA. On the maternal side - a descendant of Scottish Catholics who fled in the USA in the same XVII century from Cromwell’s persecution. Parents separated when he was 9 years old. He stayed with his mother, adopted her surname Griffen and moved with her to Paris . He quickly dropped out of school and devoted himself to literature. He made his debut as a poet in 1886 . He took up journalism. He made friends with Henri de Rainier , Stefan Mallarmé , was friends with Andre Gide , Verharn , Jamm , Valerie , entered Parisian literary salons , performed in a cabaret .
