Archostemata

Arhostemets [1] [2] , or an archostemat [3] , or ancient beetles [4] ( lat. Archostemata ) , are a suborder of Coleoptera (beetles), totaling about 60 modern species, distributed into two superfamilies and five families. Arkostematy - an ancient group of insects, which has preserved primitive features in the structure of the abdomen, as well as venation and folding of the wings. They have a similar morphology with the first beetles, the fossil remains of which are about 250 Ma.

Description

The length of the body is from 1.7 mm ( Crowsoniella relicta , Micromalthus debilis ) to more than 20 mm ( Omma stanleyi , Priacma serrata , Rhipsideigma raffrayi ) [5] . Antennae filiform or moniliform . Representatives of this sub-order are rare. Members of the five families are found throughout the world, and only two families (Cupedidae and Micromalthidae) live exclusively in North America . In Russia, the only species in the Primorsky Territory is Cupes clathratus .

Evolution

Representatives of the sub-order are known from the early Permian period ; by the second half of the Triassic , all the main groups of archestatic appeared. The suborder reached the peak of diversity in the Jurassic period , and then began its decline, so that by the end of the early Cretaceous from the archestatic only the existing families remained [6] .
