Sancho III of Castile ( Spanish Sancho III de Castilla ) or Sancho III Zhelanny ( Spanish Sancho III el Deseado ; 1134 - August 31, 1158 , Toledo ) - King of Castile since 1157. The eldest son of Berengaria of Barcelona and Alfonso VII of Castile , by will of whom the lands of Castile and Leon were divided between his two sons: after the death of his father, Sancho became king of Castile, and his brother Fernando inherited the kingdom of Leon .

Sancho assisted in the creation of the Order of Calatrava when the Templars refused to support the defense of the border town of Calatrava, to which it was transferred to Alfonso VII in 1147. Sancho transferred ownership of Calatrava to Abbot Raymond Diego Velazquez, who organized the new military order.
Sancho III ruled only a year, leaving behind a young son. He was buried in the chapel of the Cathedral of Santa Maria de Toledo .
Marriages and children
January 30, 1151 married Blanca of Navarre , daughter of Garcia IV , King of Navarre . Only one child was born from this marriage:
- Alfonso VIII ( 1155 - 1214 ), successor to Sancho III on the royal throne of Castile.
