Libertadores Cup 1961 , originally called the 1961 American Champions Cup ( Spanish. Copa de Campeones de América 1961 , port. II Copa dos Campeões da América ) - the second Libertadores Cup , the main club tournament in South America, held under the auspices of CONMEBOL . For the first time, Ecuador and Peru champions took part in the tournament. Uruguayan Penarol successfully defended the title, beating the Brazilian Palmeiras in the final.

Format
Each team played in the first stage with the other in a two -game standoff (by definition, CONMEBOL, “in groups” - de facto it was the usual two-match play-off ). In case of equality following two matches, an additional match was to be appointed. If necessary, a penalty shootout was assigned.
