Memoirs of Contemporaries

General Perevertkin, with his introductory notes, complicated the situation to the limit and carefully watched how a particular commander solved the task. Pleykhodanov and I had a good time to “laugh” with the signs at the box. Summing up the lessons, General Perevertkin said that he was satisfied with the actions of his subordinates, and suggested that everyone immediately take a picture of them as a souvenir, as events of great historical importance were coming up. This photo has remained for all of us a dear relic of those unforgettable days.

The classes conducted by General Perevertkin further strengthened our confidence in each of us, psychologically prepared for new difficult trials. The ability to inspire and guide subordinates is one of the best features of General Perevertkin as a commander and educator. He had an amazing memory. He remembered the smallest details of the battles, all the settlements through which the corps passed, he knew the names of hundreds of living and dead soldiers. Therefore, each of its thesis, each conclusion, the correspondent could always be supported by vivid examples, draw convincing pictures of bold and effective actions, and immediately compare with unsuccessful, erroneous decisions.

His authority among his subordinates was unquestioned. He was a demanding person, but extremely fair, he was distinguished by endurance and responsiveness. The general loved people, and they paid him the same. Looking ahead, I’ll say that in 1961 we all regretted to learn about the death of Hero of the Soviet Union, Colonel General S. N. Perevertkin in a plane crash ...
