Sports career
In 1997, Bhupati won his first ATR tournament in his hometown, paired with his compatriot Leander Paes . Subsequently, this couple won another 23 tournaments; In another 20 tournaments in the men's doubles category, Bhupati excelled with other partners. In the same year, Bhupati was the first Indian tennis player to win the Grand Slam tournament: this happened at the French Open , where he and the Japanese Rika Hiraki won the mixed pair competition.
Bhupati won his first three Grand Slam tournaments among male couples paired with Paes. In 1999, Bhupati and Paes participated in the finals of all four Grand Slam tournaments. Thus, this pair was the first since the beginning of the "Open Era" , which managed to get into the final of all four tournaments. In 2001, Bhupati and Paes were awarded one of the highest awards of India - “ Padma Sri ” in recognition of their merits to the country.
In 2006, Bhupati completed his mixed-double career Grand Slam title, winning the last Australian Grand Slam tournament with Martina Hingis in this category. In total, he won eight Grand Slam tournaments in the mixed tournament with seven different partners (the last two, in 2009 and 2012, with Sanya Mirza ).
Bhupati represented India five times at the Olympics and twice showed a good result in tandem with Paes: in 2004 in Athens they lost in the match for bronze to the Croatian pair Mario Anchich - Ivan Lubichich , and in 2008 in Beijing they lost in the quarterfinals to future champions Roger Federer and Stanislas Wavrinka . Bhupati and Paes twice (in 2002 and 2006) became champions of the Asian Men's Tennis Games . In total, Bhupati won 52 men's doubles tournaments during his career, winning at least one title every season from 1997 to 2013. In 2014, he spent only a few games at the beginning of the season; although he announced that he would end his career after this year's Wimbledon tournament, in the end he was not even declared for this tournament [5] . However, Bhupati returned to court again in January 2015 to participate in the APR tournament in Chennai [6] , and later played in several more tournaments up to Wimbledon. In 2016, Bhupati won the Challenger in Delhi with Yuki Bhambri , but only performed again until May, having played a total of 19 matches in professional tournaments.
Bhupati played for the Indian national team in the Davis Cup from the first year of his professional career until 2011 and played 55 games for her (8-14 in singles and 27-6 in pairs).
At the end of his playing career, Bhupati also began to engage in sports management. He became the author of the idea and the first director of a new exhibition team tournament - the International Tennis Premier League , held according to rules similar to the World Team Tennis league regulations. Matches of the International Premier League consist of five sets each, including sets in the men's and women's singles, men's and mixed doubles, as well as a set between the “tennis legends”; The winner of the match is determined by the number of games won [7] . At the end of 2014, the teams of Dubai, Mumbai, Manila and Singapore participated in the first draw of the International Premier League with the participation of such active and recently completed career stars as Novak Djokovic , Roger Federer, Andy Murray , Jo-Wilfried Tsonga , Serena Williams , Maria Sharapova , Carolina Wozniacki , Ana Ivanovich , Pete Sampras , Andre Agassi , Carlos Moya and Goran Ivanishevich [8] .
