German Karlovich Matison ( Latvian: Hermanis Matisons ; December 28, 1894 , Riga - November 16, 1932 , Riga ) - Latvian , formerly Russian , chess player and chess composer ; one of the strongest in the Baltic states in 1915 - 1930s .

He achieved his first success in 1915: 1st place in the tournament of the Riga Chess Society. Winner of the 1st Latvian Chess Congress ( 1924 ). Participant of international FIDE tournaments (the so-called amateur world championships): Paris (1924) - 1st; The Hague ( 1928 ) - 3rd place. At the international tournament in Bardejov ( 1926 ), he shared the 1-2 place with S. Tartakover . He headed the Latvian team at the IVth Olympiad 1931 , where he won against A. Alekhine (one of two defeats of A. Alekhine at the Olympiads ( 1930 - 1939 ) and A. Rubinstein .

Having defeated world champion Alexander Alekhine , from July 23, 1931 he became a member of the symbolic club of Mikhail Chigorin .

Participant in circular international tournaments in Debrecen ( 1925 ), Budapest (1926), Karlovy Vary ( 1929 ). In 1929 he was the 12th player in the world in terms of the power of the game.

One of the largest composers of his time, Matison since 1911 created over 60 compositions, many of which were awarded prizes at international competitions. Matison's studies are distinguished by the dynamism of the game, ease of construction and purity, filigree finish.

He died at the age of 37 from tuberculosis. After the death of Mathison, a collection of his best 50 sketches was placed in the chess almanac published in Riga.
