History

The palace, built in a mixed style of Gothic and early Renaissance , was built in the XV century as the residence of the prince. Each month, one of the board members of the republic of Dubrovnik was elected by the prince and settled in the palace. An inscription was carved above the entrance: “ Forget personal affairs, think about the state ”, while the ruler himself could not leave the building for personal affairs, but only for the performance of his direct duties or in case of illness. The palace housed living rooms for the prince, an office, a conference room, a court, a prison, an armory and a powder magazine . Also, keys were stored here that locked the city gates for the night.

In 1435, the palace was badly damaged by the explosion and was for a long time on a large-scale reconstruction until 1463 . Once again, the building was destroyed in 1667 during a major earthquake. Damage was caused to the interior and exterior of the palace, the elimination of which took about 30 years.

The palace served as a princely residence until 1808 , when the French Marshal Auguste Marmont abolished the republican form of government in Dubrovnik .

Today it houses the city museum, as well as the only monument erected over the centuries of the existence of the Dubrovnik Republic - the rich sailor Miho Pratsat , bequeathed to her all his fortune in the XVII century .
