History
The Hollywood Records label was founded in 1989 by Disney CEO Michael Eisner . The main idea of the label was to expand the musical activities of the company, as well as the development and career advancement of a large number of artists in various genres. In 1991, the label began to have financial problems. The only major success was an agreement with Queen , after the death of the band's vocalist Freddie Mercury . [1] But problems still persisted even after the acquisition of Mammoth Records in 1997. After little success, Mammoth Records was merged with Hollywood Records. [2]
In 1998, the company decided to merge Walt Disney with Hollywood, Lyric Street and Mammoth with Walt Disney Music Publishing, creating the Buena Vista Music Group (now the Disney Music Group ) and appointing Bob Cavallo as chairman and president of Hollywood Records. [3]
Problems continued until 2003, until the label launched Hilary Duff's music career; and it was a real success. The album sold over 5 million copies and was the beginning of a successful business model for the label. Hollywood Records, along with Disney Channel and Disney Radio, are showing a new generation of music artists. Duff was the best singer. With her, the company sold more than 13 million copies. Artists such as The Cheetah Girls , Raven-Symone , Zoë Bielen , Miley Cyrus , Vanessa Hudgens , Demi Lovato , Selena Gomez , Jonas Brothers and R5 repeat this marketing model. [4] At the same time, the label continues to develop their career with negligible commerce. The label also records Touchstone Pictures movie soundtracks. In 2010, the Lyric Street Records label was fully controlled by Hollywood Records, along with all of its contracts.
Hollywood BASIC
Hollywood BASIC [ sic ] was a short-lived Hollywood Records label focused on hip-hop music, which was managed by Dave Funkenclane. The company existed from 1990 to 1995. [5] The label could not exist after the redistribution of the main PolyGram Records deals. All records of the label were deleted, except for those that were repressed in accordance with a new deal with the duet Organized Konfusion . This was the first record label for DJ Shadow , who released his “Lesson 4” (co-authored by Double Dee and Steinski ); on the other side, they recorded the single Lifers' Group in 1991. The hip hop group consisted of prisoners convicted and serving sentences at Rahway Prison in New Jersey. They also released Shadow's Legitimate Mix on the B-side of Zimbabwe Legit in 1992. [6] Other major releases were with the duo Organized Konfusion ; their numerous second album, Stress: The Extinction Agenda (1994), is widely known. The label was also home to both Charizma and Peanut Butter Wolf , despite the fact that after the death of Charizma in 1993, the duo's music was not released. Peanut Butter Wolf will later create his own record company, Stones Throw Records , to make this music accessible to everyone. [8] The Hollywood BASIC artists included Charizma and Peanut Butter Wolf , Lifers' Group , Organized Konfusion , Raw Fusion, and Zimbabwe Legit .
Hollywood METAL
Hollywood METAL - a short-lived label among Hollywood Records, which was supposed to be directed to rock and heavy metal music. But apart from the promotional performances of Hollywood Records, the label was never realized. [9]
Distributor
After the label was launched in 1989, Elektra Records became the distributor of Hollywood Records in the USA and Canada . In 1995, PolyGram (now the Universal Music Group ) became a North American distributor. Today, Universal Music Group sells and distributes the Hollywood Records catalog in North America , Canada , Europe , Asia , South America , Mexico, and India ; at the same time, Avex sells and distributes the Hollywood Records catalog in Japan . In addition, several Hollywood Records artists, such as Miley Cyrus , Demi Lovato , Jonas Brothers , Selena Gomez & The Scene , Connect 3, and Annel Seretzeres, also record on Universal Music UK's Fascination Records . [10] In other countries, the distributor is Disney's partner EMI Music .
