Breed History

Campeiro Bulldog - was bred to help with livestock, but not like a cattle dog. Dogs that excelled at working with wild cattle and pigs were highly regarded as dogs that could guard a cart and a tropeiro horse (drivers of mules and horses that rode between regions of Brazil in the 17th century).

The breed demonstrates the functional features of its likely ancestor, namely the old English bulldog (extinct breed), which could hold pigs by the ears in a slaughterhouse and control a wild cow weighing up to 400 kg.

His abilities were widely used in slaughterhouses in the southern region of Brazil and in the region that is currently the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. In these establishments, dogs were used to pacify cattle and pigs for slaughter.

However, new legislative measures introduced by sanitary inspection made it impossible to use dogs in slaughterhouses. This event, combined with the popularity of foreign breeds that arrived in Brazil in the 1970s and 1980s, caused the Campeiro bulldogs to decline in popularity, and the breed was close to extinction [3] .
