Content
Story
The film takes place in the autumn of 1946 in a small provincial town in western Kazakhstan . A local teenager, Ivan Naidyonov (Vyacheslav Ilyushchenko), nicknamed “Gray-haired”, a passionate “dovecot”, boyishly risking his life, caught a white dove that suddenly appeared in the city. On the trophy of Sedoy other pigeon-hunters of the city learned. For the dove began hunting. Soon at night, thieves climbed into Sedogo's pigeon house and stole a dove. Gray-haired begins a search and finds a dove at the local "pigeon authority" - Kohl Gypsy ( Vladimir Steklov ). With a gray trick, she regains her prey, and, realizing that the dove is doomed anyway, she sets her free. All the events of the film unfold against the background of the meager postwar life of the inhabitants of the town - the place of exile and evacuation .
Sergey Solovyov wrote in his article about the history of film making: [2]
“In Aktyubinsk, according to a strange Gulag logic, in the late 30s almost all the non-emigrated Petersburg nobility, the intelligentsia, turned out to be. Later, the evacuees during the war years were added to the 1937 evictees. Counts, princes, secular, world-famous St. Petersburg society - all lived in samanks, flimsy houses made of clay and reeds ... "
The film is built on the contrast of good and evil, friendship and enmity, love and hate, the rich inner spiritual world of the heroes and the poor, unsettled life. To enhance the drama, the director used in the film a combination of color and brightened black and white shooting. Color photography reflects the main storyline of the film. In black and white shots, the director showed a series of minor plot lines in which episodes are shown that cause the viewer compassion and sympathy for the heroes who find themselves in a chain of ridiculous accidents in a tragic situation [3] .
Film making history
The film “Alien White and Speckled” became a turning point in the work of director Sergey Solovyov [4] .
According to Sergey Solovyov, the idea to make a film came to him after reading Boris Ryakhovsky’s story “The Adolescence of the Architect Naidyonov” in the 1978 issue of the New World magazine, which captivated his attention with a complimentary review by Chingiz Aitmatov . Inspired by the plot of the story, the director wrote the 65-page script of the future film in less than a day. Later Boris Ryakhovsky expressed doubt about the authenticity of this legend. The film was originally supposed to be shot at Mosfilm , but despite repeated attempts to get permission to shoot, the director was refused.
The film could not have taken place if it had not been for the assistance of the former Chairman of the State Committee of the Kazakh SSR on Cinematography of Olzhas Suleimenov - comrade Boris Ryakhovsky on student years, who had offered to make a film at the studio “Kazakhfilm”, in the early 1980s. The director was given a condition - the film should be shot in the Kazakh language .
According to the director, to help the future of the film, the script introduced the allegorical role of the Kazakh cosmonaut. It was in those days that cosmonaut Vladimir Dzhanibekov was in space.
In addition, the duration of the action from 1953 to 1946 was changed in the scenario. Boris Ryakhovsky considered this a wrong decision, believing that by 1953 after the war, events had already taken place in the country that had greatly changed the mood of the people.
When work on the film had already begun, the director was instructed to make a film in Russian [5] .
Shooting locations
The film was shot in Aktyubinsk , where the events described in the story took place. Most of the film was shot in Baku, at school number 78, in the village of Mukhtarova, Karadag, 8 km. To recreate the visual picture of the post-war city, the director chose old preserved tents and dugouts. The main character, Ivan Naidyonov, was “settled” in such a dugout in the suburban village of Akzhar. And the episodes with the tram tracks were filmed in Almaty, since there were no trams in Aktyubinsk, scenes were filmed in Baku at a school, and in the abandoned factory - scenes of catching a dove [6] .
