Biography

Born in Vienna in a family of Jewish immigrants from Bohemia, owners of the manufactory. He graduated from the public school and gymnasium in Vienna, where he studied at the university with a degree in law. The subject of his study at the University of Vienna was economic and political laws. In 1906, he defended his dissertation on jurisprudence.

In 1907, became secretary of the club of deputies of the Social Democratic Party in the Reichstag. In the same year, he began to work in the editorial office of the newspaper Borba, and Rabochaya gazeta.

During the First World War he was drafted into the army and sent to the Eastern Front. He participated in the rank of lieutenant in the battles in Galicia, was captured in November 1914, spent three years in Russia and returned to Austria in September 1917 .

After the death of Victor Adler in 1918, became chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Austria.

From November 21, 1918 to July 26, 1919, the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the coalition government of the Social Democrats and the Christian Social Party .

In 1921 - one of the organizers of the so-called. "Two-half" or "Vienna" international . After his association with the II (Socialist) International in 1923, he was a member of the Bureau of the Executive Committee of the Socialist International .

As editor of political workers' newspapers, Otto Bauer advocated social democracy. For such an approach to the organization of society, expressed in an attempt to "revolution with the ballot", was criticized by Leon Trotsky. He saw the main potential of political transformations in progressive economic changes and the union of Soviet and social democracies, which was supposed to ensure the construction of "Integral Socialism".

Nine volumes of his works have been published, and all of them are devoted to the problems of social justice in society. The most significant works are: Zwischen zwei Weltkriegen ?, 1936. (Between the two wars?) And Die illegale Partei, 1939. (Illegal party).
