Amlen is a five-time world champion. At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, he won the silver medal in the relay, and in individual competitions, his best result was fourth in 1,500 meters. At the next Winter Olympics in 2010 in his native Canada, he won two gold medals, becoming the best at a distance of 500 meters and in the relay. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, he won gold at a distance of 1,500 meters.
