The first two volumes were published in 1914 - 1915 . in Moscow in the publishing house "Zadruga" (with the participation of the publisher K. F. Nekrasov) under the editorship of a prominent historian Sergei Melgunov and N. P. Sidorov (a reprint of both volumes was published in 2006 in St. Petersburg by the Alpharet publishing house). The third volume was planned for publication in 1918 and was not published, but the lengthy article by A. A. Borovoy, “Modern Freemasonry in the West,” which was part of it, was published in 1923 as a separate publication [1] .
The collections fully and readily describe the history of the emergence and development of Western European and Russian Freemasonry, give literary portraits of the most prominent representatives of Freemasonry, special attention is paid to the study of Masonic rituals. Among the authors of the articles are Tira Sokolovskaya , historians Mitrofan Dovnar-Zapolsky , Vladimir Tukalevsky , Alexander Semeka, Evgeny Shumigorsky , literary scholars Ivan Rozanov and Nikolai Piksanov (with articles on Ivan Lopukhin and Mikhail Kheraskov, respectively) and others.
The publication is equipped with numerous illustrations - all kinds of attributes of the Masonic ritual, symbolic paintings, portraits of significant figures of Freemasonry, etc.
The materials of the series served as a source for scientists and writers. In particular, in his “Bulgakov Encyclopedia” B.V. Sokolov suggests Mikhail Bulgakov’s acquaintance with T.O. Sokolovskaya’s articles included in the collection “Masonic Systems” and “Ritualism of Freemasons” [2] .
Under the same title, “Freemasonry in its past and present,” in 1911 a book was published in Poltava by the publicist Vladimir Terletsky (reprinted in 1913 ).
