It was founded either by the legendary Aethol , or by his son Calydon . The city was very famous at the time of Homer (Il. 2, 640. 9. 589), and was referred to as “rocky”, “high-bearing” and “beautiful”.
In Greek myths, he is glorified by his hero Meleagrom and the Calydonian Hunt , which is described in the Iliad (I, 529 ff.). The legend says that the king of Aeneas of Kalidon, sacrificing to the gods, forgot about Artemis. The angry goddess sent a terrible boar to the land. The son of Aeneas, Meleager, killed the boar. However, because of the skin and head of the killed animal, a dispute broke out between the Kalidonians and their neighbors Kureta.
The plot of the myth was taken as the basis for the Frennh 's drama Plevronyanka .
