Creation History
“Quiet Duel” is Kurosawa’s only film based on a contemporary Japanese play (by Kazuo Kikuta [2] ). According to Kurosawa, he saw her in the theater and decided that “she is good for Mifune. He has been a gangster, and now he can become a doctor. ” [3] The initial intention of the director suggested that the main character is crazy about syphilis. But when Kurosawa sent the script into censorship, he was told that he could "scare patients with syphilis and they will no longer seek medical help." Then Kurosawa abandoned the conceived ending and "decided to enter the line of tragic love."
The modern play was chosen as a script because Kurosawa did not put the film on the large Toho studio, but on the Daiei studio, so the film needed additional advertising before going on stage. [3]
Story
During the war, the young doctor Kyoji Fujisaki (Toshiro Mifune) accidentally contracted syphilis , having cut himself during an operation. A few years later he returned home, successfully working in his father’s small clinic and gaining a reputation as a noble and kind person, however, for no apparent reason, refused to marry a girl who had been waiting for him for six years ( Miki Sanjo ). He hides his illness and is treated secretly, realizing that if he confesses to his bride, Misao will promise to wait as long as he wants, and the treatment can take more than five years. Misao is already twenty-seven, so Kyoji, not wanting to "cripple her life," forces Misao to marry another.
One day, Kyoji accidentally meets Susuma Nakada ( Kenjiro Uemura ) - a man who infected him with syphilis. The doctor is horrified to learn that Nakada does not give a damn about treatment and neglects the danger posed to those around him; moreover, Nakada’s wife, Takiko, is pregnant. Obviously, she is also infected with syphilis. When Takiko, having learned about the incident and seeing that her husband does not blame himself for anything, leaves Nakada, he accuses Kyoji of breaking up his family. However, the disease affects his brain, so Nakada goes crazy. Takiko gives birth to a dead child.
