Physical Properties

Colorless crystals with a cubic lattice of the NaCl type.

Getting

SrO is an intermediate in the production of strontium metal. Obtained by calcining strontium carbonate at a temperature of about 1400 ° C [2] :

SrCO3→SrO+CO2{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {SrCO_ {3} \ rightarrow SrO + CO_ {2}}}}

Chemical Properties

  • When calcined in a current of O 2 and high pressure (20-25 MPa) forms peroxide [3] :
2SrO+O2→2SrO2{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {2SrO + O_ {2} \ rightarrow 2SrO_ {2}}}}
  • Actively interacts with water, forming strontium hydroxide :
SrO+H2O→Sr(OH)2{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {SrO + H_ {2} O \ rightarrow Sr (OH) _ {2}}}}
  • It interacts with diluted nitric, hydrochloric and acetic acids, forming the corresponding salts.
  • It is reduced to metallic strontium by alloying with aluminum in a vacuum at 1200 ° C:
3SrO+2Al→3Sr+Al2O3{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {3SrO + 2Al \ rightarrow 3Sr + Al_ {2} O_ {3}}}}

The reaction is used in industry to produce strontium.

Application

A component of oxide cathodes of vacuum electronic devices , picture tube glass of color TVs (absorbs x-ray radiation), enamels and glazes , high-temperature superconductors , pyrotechnic compositions .
