Physical Properties
Colorless crystals with a cubic lattice of the NaCl type.
Getting
SrO is an intermediate in the production of strontium metal. Obtained by calcining strontium carbonate at a temperature of about 1400 ° C [2] :
Chemical Properties
- When calcined in a current of O 2 and high pressure (20-25 MPa) forms peroxide [3] :
- Actively interacts with water, forming strontium hydroxide :
- It interacts with diluted nitric, hydrochloric and acetic acids, forming the corresponding salts.
- It is reduced to metallic strontium by alloying with aluminum in a vacuum at 1200 ° C:
The reaction is used in industry to produce strontium.
Application
A component of oxide cathodes of vacuum electronic devices , picture tube glass of color TVs (absorbs x-ray radiation), enamels and glazes , high-temperature superconductors , pyrotechnic compositions .
