The list of the tallest buildings in Chicago ranks by height the tall buildings of the American city of Chicago , Illinois , considered the birthplace of skyscrapers. [1] [2] The tallest building in Chicago is the 108-storey Sears Tower skyscraper 442 meters high, built in 1974. [3] This skyscraper is also the tallest in the USA , and the fifth tallest in the world . In addition, the Sears Tower has the most floors among all buildings and the greatest height to the tip of the antenna (527 meters) among the buildings whose construction has been completed. [3] [4] The second, third and fourth tallest buildings in Chicago are the Trump International Hotel , Aon Center and John Hancock Center, respectively. As of August 2011, the John Hancock Center holds the title of the world's highest residential building. [5] [6] Chicago is the only city in the world that has completed the construction of more than one building with a height of over 100 floors. [7]
The history of the skyscrapers in Chicago began in 1885 , when the construction of Home Insurance Building , a building often considered the world's first steel-framed building, was completed. At first, the building was built with a height of 10 floors and 42 meters, but then, after reconstruction, the building began to have a height of 55 meters and 12 floors. [8] [9] Historically, Chicago has played a prominent role in skyscrapers. The Masonic Church building was the second tallest building in the world after the New York World Building . [10] The three buildings in Chicago were the highest buildings in the United States, including the commodity exchange building , which was the highest in the city in two of its incarnations. [11] The high-rise construction boom in Chicago began very early: in the late 1920s - early 1930s. During this period, 11 of the 92 highest buildings were built in the city. In the early 1960s, a second wave of high-rise construction followed. Since then, more than 80 buildings with a height of over 150 meters have been built, including the famous Sears Tower, Aon Center and John Hancock Center. Now in Chicago there are 75 completed buildings with a height of more than 165 meters, 2 more buildings are under construction. It is believed that Chicago is the second most skyscraper city in the US after New York . [12] As of June 2009, there are 1107 completed high-rise buildings in the city. [13] Judging by the average height of the city's skyscrapers, Chicago is the highest city in the world. [14]
Currently, only one building is being built in Chicago, the height of which, according to the project, should exceed 300 meters: this is the 319-meter Waterview Tower tower , whose construction is temporarily suspended [15] . Also, until recently, the 610-meter Chicago Spire tower was under construction . [16] [17] Upon completion of construction in 2012, the 150-story Chicago skyscraper was supposed to be the tallest building in the United States, the tenth tallest in the world [16] and the second tallest residential building in the world. [18] , however, due to economic difficulties, the construction of this building was first frozen and then completely canceled.
Highest buildings
This list includes Chicago skyscrapers over 165 meters high. This height includes spiers and other architectural elements of the building, but does not include antennas and radio masts.
