History
After the appearance of the cartoon " Kitten from Lizyukov Street ", shot by director Vyacheslav Kotyonochkin according to the script of writer Vitaliy Zlotnikov [2] , his main character became popular in many cities, especially in Voronezh. Therefore, Valery Maltsev , who was at that time the editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Young Communard,” proposed to erect a monument to the Voronezh kitten in the city. The idea was supported by the staff of the newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda and the head of the administration of the Comintern district I. D. Obraztsov, who announced the competition. The student of the 11th grade Irina Povarova won.
The idea of the eleventh grader was greatly revised by the famous sculptors Ivan Dikunov and Elsa Pak along with their sons Maxim and Alexei. The monument was installed in front of the entrance to the Mir cinema on December 5, 2003 .
The monument is subjected to vandalism: a kitten’s whiskers made of wire are periodically broken off, and they have to be restored [3] .
According to the Voronezh local historian V.I. Kononov, the kitten Vasya is most likely the third in the world and the first in Russia animated hero to whom a monument was erected [4] .
