Wenchang ( Chinese 文昌 ) is a city county in the Chinese province of Hainan . The population of the county in 1999 was 86,551; estimates for 2006 show a figure of 115,000. Currently (2009), the cosmodrome of the same name is under construction in Wenchang City County.

The city district is located close to the equator, on the seashore with an abundance of convenient bays. Wenchang's beaches are very popular with local and visiting kitesurfers.
The future space center will occupy an area of 20 km² (first stage), 30 km² (second stage).
A 407 hectare space theme park is also planned, from where it will be possible to observe missile launches.
