Biography
Georg von der Marwitz joined the German army in 1875 . In 1883 - 1886 he attended the Military Academy, until 1900 he commanded an infantry regiment, then served as chief of staff of the XVIII corps. Before the start of World War I, he was in the position of inspector general of cavalry.
World War I
With the outbreak of war in 1914, he served on the Western Front, and commanded the German forces at the Battle of Halen . After that, he was transferred to the Eastern Front, received command over the newly formed XXXVIII reserve corps, which took part in the Battle of Masuria in the winter of 1915. Then he was transferred to the south, where he led military operations against the Russian troops together with the Austro-Hungarian army. March 7, 1915 was awarded the highest military award of Prussia - the Order of “Pour le Mérite” .
Having recovered from his illness in the fall of 1915, he continued to serve on the Western Front as commander of the VI Corps. He was on the Eastern Front during the Brusilovsky offensive in the summer of 1916 .
Since October 6, 1916 - Adjutant to Kaiser Wilhelm II . In December 1916, he left this post and took command of the 2nd Army on the Western Front.
In November 1917, he commanded the German forces at the Battle of Cambrai , the first ever battle in which tanks were massively deployed.
Since September 1918, he commanded the 5th Army, led the German troops in the Saint-Miel operation .
After the war
After the war he retired. He died on October 27, 1929 at the age of 73 years.
